Santa Facts
Turn coloring time into an educational activity, even for older kids, with these Santa facts.
- He is actually based, loosely, on a real person. St. Nicholas, born around the year 270, was the Bishop of Myra – a town in what is now Turkey. He had earned a reputation for being an anonymous gift giver, especially for children.
- It wasn’t until the late 1800s that Santa had a significant other. The first mention of a spouse for Santa was in the 1849 short story A Christmas Legend by James Rees.
- The Dutch are credited with bringing the legend of Saint Nicholas to New Amsterdam (now New York City), along with the tradition of giving gifts and sweets to children on his feast day, December 6th.
- It was a poem that popularized his image. In 1822, Clement Clarke Moore wrote a poem called “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” In it, Moore described him as a “Jolly old elf” who can enter a chimney with a nod of his head. This poem is today known as “Twas the Night Before Christmas.”
- Santa has many nicknames. He’s also known as Jolly Old St. Nick, Saint Nick, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, and many, many more names.
- The tradition of leaving milk and cookies out for Santa began during the Great Depression in an effort to teach children the importance of showing gratitude during economic hardships.
